Week 6 – Practice Simulation

Time: 3 Hours

Materials: Placards, Timer, Gavel, Whiteboard or Computer with Projector, Paper for Resolutions

Activity: Lead the delegates through their first official Model United Nations simulation! However as it is a practice simulation, feel free to stop frequently to provide feedback and explain what is going on. The beginning of the practice simulation should include an introduction with the following procedural notes explained to the delegates:

  • The first motions should be a motion to open debate, and then a motion to open the Speakers’ List
  • Delegates can then move to set the speaking time to whatever time they would like
  • At the end of a speech at the Speakers’ List, delegates can yield in three wyas: o To the Chair (to give up their time), o To another delegate, or To questions (to answer questions from other delegates with the remainder of their time)
    • Delegates can raise three kinds of points:
    • Point of Order (if the rules are being used improperly)
    • Point of Personal Privilege (for issues of personal comfort and convenience)
    • Point of Information (to ask a question of the Chair)
  • Delegates can make many motions, but the main motions will be Moderated and Unmoderated caucuses
  • Delegates will be expected to turn in Draft Resolutions by the 2-hour mark, and will need x number of signatories to do so.
  • Delegates can send notes to the staff at any time with questions
  • All delegates should deliver a speech and work on a resolution

Then, start the simulation and help your delegates complete their first MUN committee!
