Public Speaking (Unlocked)

Lesson: Simple speech structure:

  • Hook: describe examples of a good speech hook:
    • A Question
    • A Story
    • An interesting statistic
    • A quote from a notable person
  • Point: the main argument can be supported with 2-3 bullets.
  • Call to Action: the main thing the speaker wants delegates to do following their speech. Be sure to provide examples of a strong Call to Action.

Instructor should then provide a good example of a Structured speech.

  • Activity: Assign students a prompt. Sample prompts:
    • What is your favorite movie in the past 5 years? (easy)
    • Who is one world leader who you admire? (medium)
    • What is the most important global issue for the United Nations to solve? (Advanced)

Give them time to prep their speech. Have one or two students demonstrate their speech in front of the entire room, and give them feedback on the structure of their speech. Break out into delegations or smaller groups with a senior member of the club leading each group, and have every student deliver a speech. Senior members should provide one piece of positive feedback, and one piece of constructive criticism relating to structure for each speaker.

  • For beginners, you just want to identify if they had the structure correct.
  • For intermediate and advanced, you want to ask how the structure and substance could’ve been improved. Do a second round using a different prompt if time permits.
