Week 1 – Fruits and Vegetables Activity
Fruits and Vegetables is the quintessential introduction to Model UN. Using common ideas and information, this activity can introduce anyone to the procedure, skills, and writing of Model UN.
Lesson/Activity: This is a multi-part activity
- Delegates will debate the Question of, “Which food group is better, fruits or
vegetables?” - Delegates should be divided into two groups. One group is all fruits and the
other all vegetables. They will each make a paper placard for their fruit or
vegetable- each person should share their fruit or vegetable so you don’t have
multiples.
Speakers List
- Delegates can pick their own fruit or vegetable within the assigned group. Give them time, and then ask for volunteers to give opening speeches. Add these volunteers to the “Speakers List”, and put it up on a projector or board.
- Once the List of opening speakers is set, remind delegates default time is 1 minute. Give them some time to write an opening speech.
- Have each speaker come up and make his or her opening speech. Keep time. Thank the speakers.
Moderated Caucus
- Encourage delegates to make motions for “moderated caucuses” in order to discuss specific sub-topics of your conversation.
- Potential topics for moderated caucuses could be health, price, taste, or anything else about the various fruits and vegetables.
Recipe Writing
- Move into an “unmoderated caucus” to form groups and write a recipe. Explain that it needs a name, minimum number of ingredients (signatories), and steps to make the salad or recipe.
- Give students time to write their recipes.
Presenting Recipes
- Call up each group to present their salads or recipes. They can read off the name, ingredients, and steps. Voting
- Each student should vote on whether they would eat the salad. Announce the result of each vote to the room. When recipes pass, delegates can celebrate.
